Before and After The Perfect Primary Bathroom

At some point, everyone dreams of having the perfect bathroom in their home. Modern fixtures, beautiful tile work, a spacious vanity, and plenty of storage are just a few trademark bathroom features designed for luxury that most homeowners crave. When Steve and Linda realized they could finally have a bathroom that fits the luxury standard, they never looked back.

Having lived in their home since 1999, the primary bathroom was a sight to see. It had 20-foot ceilings and windows covering the entire outward-facing wall. When asked why they finally decided to remodel the primary bathroom, Linda exclaimed, “It just needed it!”

After looking online at several other companies, the couple decided to trust their bathroom remodel with Thomas Kitchen upon walking through our showroom and feeling confident in their conversation with our designer, Amy. Linda remarked that Amy was a great designer who was easy to work and communicate with.

Upon getting started, Amy visited Steve and Linda’s home to perform a thorough walkthrough, render what the new bathroom would look like, and provide a quote for the project. “We just didn’t know what things cost now,” Linda said in response to the quote. Though initially shocked at the market rate, they decided the renovation would be worth the investment.

Thomas Kitchen began working away on June 1st and finished by the end of July. Creating the perfect bathroom for Steve and Linda took about eight weeks. We gutted the entire bathroom, replacing everything: cabinets, flooring, vanity, bathtub, shower, and lighting.

Throughout the course of those eight weeks, we never had any issues during the project, and Steve and Linda were in constant contact with Tim and Amy to stay informed.

In the end, the couple spent more money on remodeling their bathroom than they expected— by choice. They got everything they dreamed of, allocating more money to put in a luxury bathtub and heated floors. Steve and Linda wanted a perfect bathroom, and that’s what they got.

The large shower with a bench and an added storage tower were just two of Steve and Linda’s favorite features. When asked why Linda loved the storage tower so much, she said, “Anytime you walk into our bathroom, it always looks fabulous!”

Steve added, “The tile guy, the electrician, they were all great. Tim expected that from them. [I loved] the quality of the work, and they stuck to the quote.” Now, Steve and Linda can enjoy their dream bathroom, brought to reality. Even their friends and family love the beautiful transformation!

Before and After: Happy Kitchen, Happy Home

A kitchen is the heart, the hub, and the central gathering space of a home. When Diane and her husband moved into a 14-year-old house in Del Webb, a retirement community, she immediately knew that the kitchen would need a makeover in order to create a happy home for the next 15 years. Quite simply, it was dull and boring, and it lacked the modern elegance you see in today’s contemporary kitchens.

Deciding to transform their kitchen from drab to top-of-the-line, Diane did a quick online search for a local company and landed on Thomas Kitchen & Bath in Lebanon, TN. It only took one walk through our showroom for Diane to feel compelled to set a meeting that day with our designer, Amy Garcia.

A simple five-word request laid the foundation for Amy’s designs, “I want a happy kitchen.” After an initial consultation of their home, Amy presented a visual rendering of what their new kitchen would look like: happy. Diane commented, “It was nice because we had an opportunity to sit with Amy and pick things out with her, and she was receptive to our feedback.”

Like many homeowners, Diane had an idea of what she liked, but she needed a little help putting her ideas into reality. Our designer truly stepped up to the plate, according to Diane. “Amy somehow came up with a plan that we didn’t have to change much on. She has a real gift,” she gleamed with excitement.

Tim (the owner) and Amy presented a plan for the kitchen remodel, laying out what the couple should expect regarding time and budget. Once getting started, the entire kitchen was gutted, and everything was replaced.

Diane commented that the workers who gutted the kitchen and rebuilt it from the ground up were very trustworthy. She even noted how impressed she was with the Master Tiler, saying, “The tile work was perfect!”

Once the final touches were made, Diane and her husband couldn’t believe the transformation. She finally had a happy kitchen, specifically loving the huge new cabinets, automatic cabinet closure, new range and hood, and new quartz that brought the space to life.

Diane and her husband were so happy with their kitchen that they came back to Thomas Kitchen & Bath and had their Primary and Hall Bathrooms also done the following year. When asked what made our company a great option, she concluded, “Their professionalism, their customer service, and the finished product!”

Before and After: An Expertly Crafted Kitchen Renovation

Sometimes a frustrating event or a bad day can become a blessing in disguise. When Christi Sampson and Darrell Bult’s stove went out, they decided this annoyance was the catalyst they needed to start the kitchen renovation they had long been putting off. It was important for the couple to support local businesses during the pandemic, so they decided to stop by Thomas Kitchen & Bath to discuss their plans for their kitchen. Noting that we “captured [their] vision,” the couple picked Thomas over other companies with similar quotes because we provided a higher level of professionalism.

Christi and Darrell were impressed right away with the level of communication they received. The schedule outlined the full project timeline, and our team of experienced tradespeople stuck to it. Construction lasted eight weeks from August to October 2021. Throughout the process, the couple was highly impressed with our cleanliness, attention to detail, and friendliness. “Tim is the owner, and he was there and was so personable,” Christi noted. “He really cared about us.”

Though the kitchen floorplan did not change, the project was a significant upgrade. Christi and Darrell got new cabinets, new countertops, new tiled backsplash, new LED task lighting, and new plumbing fittings and fixtures. The mousy gray cabinets were switched out for a crisp white color and the cabinet hardware was upgraded to an elegant, brushed gold style.

The couple immediately marveled at their new kitchen. Darrell commented that “the rendering was beautiful, but this is beyond our expectations.” “Our kitchen is nicer than our house,” Christi gushed. The couple also remarked that the process was stress-free, the team kept in constant contact, and that friends and family who see the new kitchen are amazed.

Kitchen Backsplash Trends You Should Consider

Your counter’s tile backsplash might not be the first thing on your mind when you think about launching a kitchen renovation. However, this design element can play a focal point in your kitchen, and add either a splash of color and personality or a warm, neutral hue. Check out these new trends in backsplash to get you inspired:

Geometric Shapes

An atypical shape to your tile backsplash is the quickest way to draw attention to your kitchen. This approach is a bit risky, but done right it’ll surely wow your cocktail party guests. Hexagons and herringbones are particularly trendy right now, and with a bold color, they can make an all-white kitchen pop.

Marble

Marble looks great on your countertops, so why not add it to your backsplash as well? Instead of the traditional tile look, pick a continuous slab that matches perfectly with your countertops to give your kitchen a cohesive, put-together look. You can create this look with quartzite as well, but because some quartz materials are not resistant to heat, check with your remodeler first.

Interesting Textures

There’s no law that says you have to stick to the typical 3×6 tile for your backsplash. Try out a longer tile (like 3×10 or 2×8) to create a calming aesthetic. Adding texture with ceramic or porcelain tiles can in term add dimension to your backsplash and draw attention to it.

Which Kitchen Style is Right for You?

So you want to completely redo your kitchen, but you don’t know where to start. A good first step is to pick a specific style you want your kitchen (and your lifestyle!) to reflect, and then go from there. This way, all of the pieces you select will fit into one consistent image perfectly. Here are a few kitchen styles to provide you with some inspiration:

Contemporary

As the name suggests, the contemporary kitchen style reflects today’s trends. This style is marked by minimalism, eco-friendliness, technological advancement, and a clean look. Think  flat-front cabinetry, sleek fixtures, and wooden accents. To truly embrace the 20th century, consider investing in “smart” kitchen gadgets like coffeemakers and refrigerators that connect to the Internet.

Modern

Originating around the time of the first World War, modern-style kitchens remain very popular. This type of kitchen is marked by flat surfaces, striking geometric forms, and little to no ornamentation or decorations. Modern kitchen cabinets will have a sleek look and won’t have any visible hardware.

Farmhouse

Looking to recreate the magic of your grandma’s kitchen, or step inside the pages of Little House on the Prairie? Sounds like the farmhouse kitchen style is right for you. Try out apron-front sinks, plaid curtains and kitchen towels, bronze faucets, oak ceiling beams, and white cabinets with cute, oversized hardware. A farmhouse kitchen is sure to add a sense of warmth and comfort to your home.

Scandinavian

Try this sleek and elegant, yet scaled back look. The hallmark of a Scandinavian-style kitchen is warm wood flooring and cabinetry, minimalist yet textured backsplash, and sleek stools. A blend of textures and soft hues will ensure your home looks clean, happy and inviting.

Industrial

An industrial-style kitchen is characterized by wide open space and exposed brick, piping and beams. If you want to create this type of kitchen in your home, use the color gray whenever possible, keep the design simple, and prioritize open space as much as you can.

What To Know Before Getting Started

So you’re thinking of undertaking a kitchen or bathroom renovation or remodel. Congratulations! Taking on such a project will greatly enhance your day-to-day life and make your home work better for you, not to mention the possibility of increasing your home’s value. Hiring an experienced professional team like Thomas Kitchen and Bath will dramatically reduce the stress involved with a renovation or remodel, but there are still quite a few things you should consider before you schedule a consultation:

Timing

A kitchen and full bath remodel will take roughly six to eight weeks from start to finish. The most important variable when it comes to timing is the type of materials you will need as well as their availability. Unfortunately, due to pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, we are at the mercy of our materials’ availability, so you’d be smart to factor that in as well. You won’t have access to your kitchen or bathroom during much of the process, so plan and budget accordingly. Additionally, you should take into account when your renovation will start—lead times are typically three months out.

Cost

At Thomas Kitchen and Bath, we don’t treat anything as a “cookie cutter renovation.” We value and provide customized solutions based on our specific customers’ needs. Thus, you should understand that pricing will be highly variable due to the customized solutions and materials you choose.

Your Wants

Though Thomas Kitchen & Bath will act as a guide throughout your process and advise you on the impact of any decisions you make, we want all of our remodels to be customer-focused. This means that you should come to the process knowing what you want and how you will use your new space. Don’t worry about staying on top of trends to maximize your home’s resale value, as these change quickly. Focus on what you love, and would enjoy in your home!

Before and After: The Dodsons’ Bathroom Remodel

If you live in an older home, you may love the nostalgic aesthetic and the classical architecture, but wish you could make your home’s features accommodate your modern lifestyle. Barbara and Pierce Dodson loved showing off their 50+ year old home in Lebanon, Tennessee’s Oak Hill neighborhood, but wanted a nice, updated bathroom for visitors and party guests. The Dodsons decided to remodel their guest bathroom, and hired Thomas Kitchen and Bath to get the job done.

This Tennessee couple is no stranger to home improvement projects, undergoing several remodeling jobs on their home over the years. However, Barbara noted that in previous projects she felt the need to be involved the whole way through, and “I needed someone who could listen to me and go in and design the space for me.” According to the Dodsons, Thomas Kitchen and Bath stood out through our proactive planning process, meticulous project management, and high-quality finished product.

First, the Dodsons met with our Lead Designer Amy Garcia to come up with a plan together. The plan included a detailed list of everything that was going to be done; the Dodsons knew exactly what to expect before the project had even started. “My job was in the planning and figuring out what I wanted. The planning was everything. Once it was done, I just got to relax,” said Barbara.

The end result was a sleek, elegant transformation. We switched out pink countertops and flowery wallpaper for a mix of sophisticated grays. We updated the hardware on the faucets, installed brand new cabinets, put in tile flooring, and modernized the bathtub and shower to give it a spa-like aesthetic.

The couple also gushed over the work of our crew, noting that they were very timely, considerate of time and space within the home, and that every person who worked on their home cleaned up after themselves.

Every Question You Should Be Asking Your Remodeler

Deciding to take on a kitchen or bathroom renovation or remodel is a time-consuming, costly, arduous task, and it’s ill-advised to go it alone. To make sure your job is completed on time, within your budget, and up to your standards, it’s crucial to hire a remodeler who knows their stuff. If this is your first home improvement project and you’re not sure how to vet potential candidates, here are some questions you can ask:

  1. Are you licensed? Do not ever take a risk on an unlicensed remodeler. Be sure to look up your remodeler’s license and registrations to make sure they’re qualified to perform the project you want done. Also important is having your remodeler provide their own certificate of insurance to make sure they have the right credentials to work on your project.
  2. Can you put me in touch with a few references? Every reputable remodeler would be happy to put you in touch with past clients in order to demonstrate that they’re experienced in the field and good at what they do. Another necessity is to check the company’s Better Business Bureau rating—you can find ours here
  3. What specific services do you provide? If you want a hassle-free remodel (or at least a project with as little hassle as possible), it’s better to go with a full-service remodeler like Thomas Kitchen and Bath. Full-service remodelers bring with them a complete team of experts with specialized trades that can get the job done faster and at a higher level of quality while also being sound project managers.
  4. What happens if additional costs pop up? You’ve probably watched enough home improvement shows to understand that things sometimes happen that will drive up the cost of the remodel—this could mean the discovery of mold or rodents, or the need to bring your home up to code. If this happens, you need to have an agreement that your remodeler will let you know as soon as a problem is spotted and seek your input before upping the budget accordingly.
  5. What is your communication style? Communication is key when it comes to a home remodel. You need to know who your primary point of contact is, how to get in touch with them, and how often you can expect to hear from them. At Thomas Kitchen and Bath, we prioritize staying in touch with our clients at all points of the process, so they know what stage we are at and what to expect. We pride ourselves on providing the best customer experience in the region.

At Thomas Kitchen and Bath, we’re always happy to answer your questions. If you’re looking to start a new kitchen or bath remodel, give us a call today!

The Next Best Thing in Fixtures

No kitchen remodel is complete without a bold, beautiful light fixture hanging right over your island or dining room table. Whether you’re looking for simple and elegant or colorful and sassy, the right fixture can light up your room (in more ways than one!) and wow your guests. If you’re looking to install a new light fixture, take these new trends into account:

Art Deco

If you really want to make a statement and set your kitchen apart from your friends’ and neighbors’, mid-century modern and Art Deco are the way to go. Think strong geometric designs, sharp lines, and natural shapes. A Sputnik chandelier is an obvious example, but a design involving countless small bulbs of light looks trendy as well.

Minimalism

If you have complex designs or powerful statement pieces in your kitchen, a neutral and relaxed lighting fixture might work better for you. Try soft colors like beige or white, simple geometric designs, or clean line cannisters.

Back to Nature

Want to embrace an eco-friendly aesthetic and invoke the feeling of relaxing inside a wood cabin? Try out lighting fixtures wrapped in wood fibers. You can also consider other natural materials like cotton, metal, or seagrass.

LED Lighting

While incandescent bulbs shine brightly, they’re considered to be very wasteful based on the amount of heat generated. LED lighting is more efficient, environmentally friendly, and long lasting than traditional incandescent bulbs. While the initial cost can be a downside to an LED fixture, the lower annual operating cost and long life can outweigh the higher initial investment

Our Favorite Tiling Trends

When you walk through your friends’ kitchen or into your neighbor’s bathroom, you probably don’t take notice of the rooms’ flooring or tiles. Maybe you haven’t given much thought to it yourself as you plan out your kitchen or bathroom remodel. But the right kind of tiles—unique, durable, and stylish—can illuminate your whole room. If you’re looking for ideas, here’s what’s trending in the tile world in 2021:

Moroccan Style

If you’re looking to add an exotic splash to your floor tiles, then a vibrant Moroccan pattern is the way to go! While bold and trendy, these tiles are popular enough to be considered a classic style that won’t go out of date. A mix of bold colors and interesting patterns will invoke visions of world travel.

Earth-Loving

Everyone wants to feel like they’re one with nature, and why shouldn’t this aspiration be invoked in all areas of your home? A rich, earthy green tone lining your kitchen backsplash or bathroom wall has a calming yet vibrant effect.

Unique Shapes

Instead of the tired rectangular or metro tiles, try a hexagon shape—this trend has been super popular all throughout 2020 for a reason! Combine this with a simple marble or wood finish, or add metallic accents, and your kitchen just got a lot cooler.
